Rave Scientific offers new and refurbished aperture bars and strips for FEI and Micrion FIB ion columns. Our apertures can be made from Molybdenum or Tungsten. As both are refractory metals, compatible with the FIB column, it should be noted that Tungsten has somewhat of a lower sputter yield and rate than that of Molybdenum, therefore consumable apertures made from Tungsten will have a slightly longer lifetime.Molybdenum when back-sputtered onto the liquid metal ion source, is alloyed with Gallium, thus increasing its melting temperature and reducing the super-cooling properties. In laymen terms it means that if the Gallium in the source gets contaminated by back-sputtering from the Molybdenum apertures, the tendency to solidify at room temperature increases, thus reducing stability of the ion source, increasing frequency of source heatings and reducing source lifetime. In comparison Tungsten is not mixable with Gallium and does not alloy with it, thus influence of W back-sputtering on the Ga LMIS is minimal.

It includes thorough reconditioning of the original holder and 7 new aperture disks with hole sizes ranging from 10 micrometers to 1000 micrometers. The refurbishment can be ordered with aperture disks made from either M - Molybdenum or W - Tungsten material. The price includes one disk with a 10um aperture. This 7-position aperture bar is compatible with the Micrion 2000, Micrion 2100, Micrion 2500, Micrion 9000, Micrion 9100, Micrion 9500, Micrion 8000, Micrion 9800, FEI Vectra 986, and FEI Vectra 980 FIB systems. Aperture disks made from tungsten can result in up to 2x longer useful lifetime.
